Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

This interesting tale includes time travel, paranormal talents, World War 2, monsters, and a remote island. What more could you ask for? If you answered eerie black and white photographs, then you are in for a treat. The tale starts with our hero Jacob trying to believe his grandfather's stories of monsters and the orphanage he lived in as a young man. According to Jacob's grandfather, the orphanage housed the strangely talented children, among them an invisible boy, a super strong girl, a clairvoyant, and a girl that can make fire in her hands. Grandfather shows Jacob compelling pictures of these children but they begin to look like manipulated images rather than evidence as Jacob gets older.

Jacob gets a call from his agitated grandfather who wants the key to his gun safe. Jacob rushes to the rescue and finds the house randsacked and follows a trail into the woods where he finds his dying grandfather with horrible wounds. Jacob is convinced he sees a monster in the woods right before his grandfather dies. The dying words of his grandfather send Jacob on a quest to find out the truth about his grandfather's orphanage stories in spite of the fact that no one else believes in the monster or the talents of orphanage children.

Read the book to find out if Jacob uncovers the truth or is suffering from delusions brought about by the trauma of his grandfather's death in his arms. Readers will not be disappointed in this blend of story and eerie images that make a compelling whole.
